Things to Do in La Tejita, Tenerife South: Beach, Food & Craft Beer

La Tejita sits on the southeast coast of Tenerife, roughly 10 minutes from the airport and a world away from the tourist resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas. No high-rises, no souvenir shops, no all-inclusive buffets. Just a spectacular natural beach, a growing food scene, and the kind of laid-back atmosphere that makes you forget you were supposed to go sightseeing today.

La Tejita Beach

The main draw is the beach itself — one of the longest natural beaches in Tenerife at nearly a kilometer of golden sand. Unlike the artificial beaches in the tourist zones, La Tejita is natural, with the dramatic backdrop of Montaña Roja (Red Mountain) at one end and views of the ocean stretching to infinity.

The beach is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers thanks to consistent winds, but there's plenty of space for swimming and sunbathing. The eastern end, closer to Montaña Roja, is a naturist area.

Tips:

  • Get there early on weekends — parking fills up
  • The wind picks up in the afternoon, so mornings are best for swimming
  • Bring water and shade — there are no beach bars on the sand
  • The hike up Montaña Roja takes about 20 minutes and the views are incredible

Where to eat in La Tejita

The La Tejita Street Market shopping center is where most of the dining action happens. It's a modern, open-air complex right next to the beach with a good mix of restaurants.

For craft beer and burgers, that's where we come in. Rock N Hopz has been in La Tejita since day one, serving 286 craft beers from around the world alongside smash burgers, artisan cheese boards, and pizza. No TVs, no football — just rock music and good conversation.

Beyond us, the area has sushi spots, Italian restaurants, cafés, and a few local tapas bars in the village itself. The food scene has grown significantly in the last couple of years.

Beyond the beach: what else to do

Montaña Roja hike

The volcanic cone at the end of the beach is a short but rewarding hike. The trail starts near the parking area and takes about 20 minutes to reach the top. From there you get 360-degree views: the beach below, El Médano to the east, the airport, Mount Teide in the distance. Best at sunset.

El Médano

The neighboring town of El Médano is a 10-minute walk or 3-minute drive. It's the windsurf and kitesurf capital of Tenerife, with a charming town center, a boardwalk, and more restaurant options. Thursday evenings there's a street market.

Wine tasting in the south

Tenerife has several wine regions with volcanic soils that produce unique wines. The closest wineries to La Tejita are in the Abona and Güímar valleys — about 20-30 minutes by car.

Day trips

  • Mount Teide — Spain's highest peak, about 1 hour drive. The cable car takes you to 3,555m
  • Los Gigantes — Dramatic cliffs on the west coast, plus whale watching boats
  • Masca — Famous hiking trail through a gorge to the ocean
  • La Laguna — UNESCO World Heritage city in the north
